Rhinos sweat over Buderus fitness

Danny Buderus
Buderus has penned a two-year deal with the Super League champions

Leeds Rhinos could be without new hooker Danny Buderus for the start of the season.

The former Australia captain arrived at the weekend and will continue his recovery from a torn bicep.

Rhinos coach Brian McClennan told BBC Radio Leeds: "We don't want to put a time on when he will get back because it's a serious injury.

"He'll get terrific help from our medical staff and we'll just assess him as we go."

Buderus suffered the injury while playing for the Newcastle Knights in the NRL and has signed a two-year contract with the Super League champions.

It was hoped that he might be fit for the Leeds' season opener against Celtic Crusaders on 6 February, but McClennan admitted he could not be certain the 30-year-old would be ready.

"Our medical staff will be working with him and he'll be trying his best to be [ready]," added McClennan.

"He's really excited about becoming a part of the Rhinos and I'm looking forward to seeing him develop relationships with this wonderful group of players we've got."
