Eastwood has made 62 appearances for the Broncos |
Leeds Rhinos have signed highly rated New Zealand international Greg Eastwood from Brisbane Broncos. The versatile player will be a direct replacement for Great Britain star Gareth Ellis, who joins Australian side West Tigers at the end of the season. Eastwood, 21, has signed a three-year deal and will move to Headingley after the World Cup in November. "I am really excited about joining Leeds Rhinos and coming to England," said Eastwood. Rhinos coach Brian McClennan knows all about his potential having given Eastwood his New Zealand debut in the Anzac Test of 2006. "I have followed Greg's progress for a few years having watched him come through the ranks with the Junior Kiwis and then develop through the Broncos system," he said. | 606: DEBATE |
"He is still only 21, so that means that we are getting a player who has huge potential and is at the early stage of his career. "He is very skilful and has great versatility, having played on the wing, centre, stand-off and second row for the Broncos and has even filled in at dummy half, despite being 105kg, at times this season." Eastwood is Leeds' second significant signing for 2009 after hooker Danny Buderus. However, the Australia international is thought to have ruptured the biceps on his right arm during the Newcastle Knights' 38-24 win over North Queensland and is expected to miss the first month of next season with an arm injury. The Super League champions have also been linked with Eastwood's international team-mate Frank Pritchard, who plays for Penrith Panthers.
