Giants release Kiwi centre Paul Whatuira from contract

Huddersfield Giants have allowed New Zealand centre Paul Whatuira an early release from his Giants contract.

The ex-Kiwi international, 28, whose three-year deal expires at the end of the season, has requested to return down under on compassionate grounds.

And, with neither party looking to extend his contract, a mutual release was finalised.

Whatuira, who has experienced high-profile personal problems, has not been a Giants regular this season.

But he has still managed four tries in 10 appearances, to add to the 19 tries in 48 games he plundered in his first two seasons at the Galpharm.

Wellington-born Whatuira, who signed for Huddersfield from Wests Tigers three years ago, has suffered a leg injury.

But he has also been coming to terms with his arrest in October 2009, which led to him entering a psychiatric hospital after admitting that he had been abused as a child.

"In the long-term interest of the player he needs a break to get his leg right and recharge his batteries ahead of his next career move," said Huddersfield general manager Richard Thewlis.

"We all hope that a good break will enable him return back to rugby league, at his best."

Whatuira, who played for Huddersfield in their Challenge Cup final defeat by Warrington last season, added: "The club have supported me and my family through some difficult times.

"I have really enjoyed my time at Huddersfield, I wish them every success in the future and am looking forward to a break and then to returning to action fully fit."
