Rugby star released from hospital

Paul Whatuira
New Zealand-born Mr Whatuira plays centre for Huddersfield Giants

No further action will be taken against a rugby league player arrested in connection with two assaults, West Yorkshire Police have confirmed.

Huddersfield Giants' New Zealand star Paul Whatuira, 28, was bailed and taken to a hospital for mental assessment after his arrest last month.

Following further interviews with Mr Whatuira, the Crown Prosecution Service decided not to proceed with the case.

He has been released from his bail and the specialist mental health unit.

Huddersfield Giants refused to comment on local newspaper reports that the player was set to report for pre-season training next week.

Mr Whatuira, who has won 16 caps for New Zealand, joined Huddersfield from Wests Tigers at the start of the 2008 season and was in their Challenge Cup final team at Wembley in August.
