Rugby star in mental health unit

A rugby league player has been taken to hospital for mental assessment after he was arrested in connection with two assaults in West Yorkshire.

Huddersfield Giants' New Zealand star Paul Whatuira, 28, was arrested in the early hours of Tuesday at a property on St Thomas Road in Huddersfield.

Following the arrest Mr Whatuira was bailed and taken to hospital.

Giants managing director, Richard Thewlis, said Mr Whatuira had the club's "full medical support".

Mr Thewlis said: "The club is upholding its duty of care to provide the best possible environment to help Paul."

West Yorkshire Police confirmed that a 28-year-old man was arrested following reports of two assaults in Huddersfield on Tuesday morning.

They said the man was subsequently bailed and taken to hospital for mental assessment.
