Huddersfield to trim squad by six

Beaten Challenge Cup finalist Paul Jackson is among six players to be released by Huddersfield Giants at the end of the season.

Australian Liam Fulton and former Harlequins loose forward Joe Walsh are also leaving the Galpharm Stadium.

Reserve players Richard Lopag, Tom Hemingway and Chris Lawson will also be released by the club.

Huddersfield managing director Richard Thewlis said: "Jacko has been a tremendous player for our club."

He added: "He has an opportunity elsewhere that is the right one for him to accept."

The 30-year-old prop forward is expected to rejoin Castleford, while Fulton could return to Wests Tigers in the NRL.

Sometimes these situations mean that quality people have to move on

Huddersfield managing director Richard Thewlis

Thewlis said: "Liam was always a short-term option for us after the Todd Carney deal fell away and he has been great to have around the team but he has unfulfilled ambitions in the NRL to pursue.

"It's sad in many ways yet the salary cap rules are designed to share talent around the game and stop stockpiling of quality by any one club and sometimes these situations mean that quality people have to move on."

Huddersfield will also lose hooker Scott Moore, who is returning to St Helens after his loan spell, but have signed Wakefield hooker Brad Drew, St Helens second rower Lee Gilmour and South Sydney forward David Fa'alogo.

They are also expected to add Wakefield utility back Scott Grix to their list of newcomers.
