Johnson and Sa will hope to lead the Dragons to success next year |
Catalans Dragons have made a double swoop with the signings of Dallas Johnson and Setaimata Sa. Loose forward Johnson, 26, has been released by the Melbourne Storm because of salary cap constraints and signs a three-year deal. Sa, 22, had two years left on his contract with Sydney Roosters but has been released as part of an exchange deal involving prop Jason Ryles. Ryles returns home after a year of a three-year deal for personal reasons. Sa, who has signed a two-year contract, won four caps with the Kiwis and was a member of their victorious World Cup squad last year. But he was dropped from their Four Nations touring party after appearing in court charged with a series of alcohol-related offences, including assaulting a female police officer. Catalans coach Kevin Walters said: "I am very excited to have secured his services. Although Sa has had a difficult season with the Sydney Roosters he is very much looking forward to arriving and playing for the Dragons. "He is a big, strong and skilful back-rower or centre with tremendous potential." Sa, who previously represented Samoa, said: "I have enjoyed my time playing in the NRL for the Sydney Roosters and have been lucky enough to have the opportunity to represent New Zealand. | 606: DEBATE |
"I am now very excited about the opportunity to play overseas for the Catalan Dragons and am looking at this move as a new and exciting challenge for my family and I." Johnson, who had two years left on his contract with the Storm, has played in the last four NRL Grand Finals and has been a member of the Queensland team which has won four consecutive State of Origin titles. He has made 151 appearances in the NRL and is highly regarded for his defence, with an average of 40 tackles a game: he once made a world record of 62 tackles during a State of Origin game, He is a potential replacement for skipper Greg Bird, who is currently answering an assault charge in Sydney and will appeal against a jail sentence for wounding later this month. Walters added: "Dallas is a champion player who will bring a lot to our team, especially thanks to his exceptional defensive skills. "He is a natural leader and is exactly the type of player the Dragons need to keep improving year after year. I am sure our supporters and sponsors will love Dallas' attitude and commitment to the club both on and off the field."
