Bird has made a big impression in the State of Origin series

Bradford Bulls have won the race to sign Australia stand-off Greg Bird.

The 24-year-old has signed a one-year contract for 2009 with an option for another two years.

Bird, who has two caps for the Kangaroos, was released from his deal at NRL side Cronulla Sharks in order to move to Super League.

"We're delighted to have captured one of the most sought-after signatures in the world of rugby league," said Bulls chairman Peter Hood.

"A player of Greg's calibre and current status as a State of Origin and Test player is a great capture for the Bradford Bulls.

"His ability as a player is undoubted and we are all very excited to see his in a Bulls shirt this year."

Bulls coach Steve McNamara was equally pleased to have beaten off competition from other Super League clubs.

"The signing of another top class international compliments our ongoing junior development strategy. Our message is clear - the Bulls are on the charge."

Bird's career in Australia has suffered since he was arrested for allegedly attacking his American girlfriend in August last year.

The player, who has maintained his innocence, is due in court on 27 April on charges of reckless wounding and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
