Ben Hannant & Karmichael Hunt celebrate the Maroons' victory |
Queensland levelled the State of Origin series with a comprehensive victory in the second match in Brisbane. Brisbane Broncos winger Darius Boyd scored two first-half tries as Queensland led 16-0 at half-time. Johnathan Thurston converted both tries and kicked two penalties, then added another penalty in the 57th minute. Ben Hannant and winger Israel Folau added further tries with Thurston making both conversions to the delight of the 52,000 crowd at Suncorp Stadium. It was a deserved win for the Maroons, and atoned for their 18-10 defeat in Sydney last month. Key man Boyd did not play in the first Origin match and he came into the side when Justin Hodges was suspended for six matches for a dangerous throw in a National Rugby League match 10 days ago. Thurston's late conversion equalled an Origin record held by former Canberra Raiders captain and current Queensland coach Mal Meninga. The third and deciding game in the annual high-profile series between the two premier states in Australian rugby league will be played on 2 July in Sydney.
