Wayne Godwin scored twice in four minutes to put the Bulls in front |
Bradford finally ended their 12-match losing streak with a 38-28 win over Wakefield that sees them leapfrog their opponents in the Super League table. Wakefield lead 12-0 after Danny Kirmond and Daryl Millard scored early on. The Bulls levelled when Brett Kearney and Andy Lynch went over before Wayne Godwin scored twice to put them ahead. After the break Elliott Whitehead went over for the Bradford before Sam Obst, Glen Morrison and Sean Gleeson punished poor defending to score for Wakefield. Bradford will be relieved to see their club record for a losing streak finally come to an end with their first victory since beating Wakefield at Belle Vue 12 matches ago. The visitors took the lead after a penalty was awarded against Heath L'Estrange who was judged to be holding Morrison down illegally. | 606: DEBATE |
Some quick passing and clever interplay between Paul Johnson and Kirmond saw the latter score. Obst's stubbed grubber kick was well fielded Millard who then evaded two tackles to cross the whitewash and , with the two successful kicks, give the Wildcats a 12-0 lead. The visitors were looking to avoid a fifth consecutive defeat but the Bulls were not out of the contest and two minutes later started an attack deep in their own half. Michael Platt made the initial line break before offloading to Sykes. He then passed to Kearney who raced in from halfway. With Sykes on target with the boot they soon drew level when Danny Addy's pass found skipper Lynch. Sykes put Bulls in front with a penalty before Godwin's two tries inside four minutes were both converted. Kearney turned provider after the break when his grubber kick was gathered and grounded by Whitehead and Sykes' boot put the hosts 20 points clear. In the 52nd minute Obst produced a fine solo try after he gathered his own kick and the Wildcats suddenly rallied. Poor Bradford defending allowed Morrison in his for his try and missed tackles saw Gleeson scamper over for his score with a quarter of an hour remaining.
Bradford caretaker coach Lee St Hilaire: "I'm pleased that we did it at home in the last game of the season to send the fans home happy as well as ourselves. "The two penalties we gave away led to two tries. The boys then said 'hang on a minute', we've got to start performing. "I thought they did that and Wayne Godwin came off the bench - he lit us up - and we came in with a comfortable half-time lead." Wakefield manager John Kear: "Well obviously, we were the architects of our own downfall. "It was in the quarter before half-time that we went from 12-0 up to 26-12 down and we just made error after error - early tackle errors and then late tackle penalties and that just killed us. "The Wayne Godwin try before half-time gave us one score too many to fight back from. "They did play some good rugby, they did entertain the fans and they did show some fight back [in the second half] but it is a very disappointing afternoon for us."
