Wakefield kept their hopes of a Super League play-off place alive with a workmanlike 29-6 win over Hull.

The Wildcats went behind early when Jordan Turner scored a try, but ex-Hull man Paul Cooke equalised when he crossed six minutes later.

A Julien Rinaldi try and Cooke penalty extended the hosts's first-half lead.

After the break, Charlie Leaeno crashed over and Ben Jeffries added a drop-goal before Daryl Millard and Jason Demetriou scored breakaway tries.

Both sides started poorly in sultry conditions at Belle Vue, showing little invention and committing basic errors.

The hosts squandered a certain try on six minutes when they failed to convert a three-on-one and allowed Richard Whiting to intercept.

Turner made them pay three minutes later when he was on the end of a move created by Shaun Berrigan's dink-kick.

Tickle then passed a career points total of 750 with the conversion.

Ex-Hull man Cooke then passed his own personal landmark shortly after when he crossed for the 50th try of his career, which had a hint of a knock-on about it, and he converted.

Frenchman Rinaldi extended Wakefield's lead when he squirmed over following Cooke's cross-field kick.

Hull were denied a try shortly before the break when Kirk Yeaman was controversially judged to have been offside at the play-the-ball.

Both sides began the second half conservatively as they each completed their sets until Leaeno smashed his way over from five yards at first receiver after 52 minutes.

Cooke slotted the easy conversion and shortly after Jeffries extended the home side's lead to 13 points with a cleanly-struck drop-goal.

Hull rallied with a series of plays as the game moved into the final quarter but Jon Kear's men galvanised in defence as the pressure mounted and managed to keep the visitors out.

Wakefield's Aaron Murphy had a try disallowed after he was adjudged to have knocked on a kick through.

As the game progressed, Hull appeared more fatigued, and when Richard Horne's laboured pass went loose Daryl Millard pounced and stepped twice before fending off Tansey to score a great try - again converted by Cooke.

As the end approached, Demetriou chanced his arm with an interception which came off and he sprinted clear to compound Hull's misery but Jefferies could not add the extras.

Wakefield coach John Kear:
"I'm very happy. A lot of questions were asked of the players and they answered them all really well.

"It was simple, back to basics and working hard and that's what the players did. It drained the energy out of Hull.

"But we can't do one week penthouse and one week doghouse. We have to find some consistency and we'll try and stay in the penthouse."

Hull FC coach Richard Agar:
"We lost too many contests, too many little battles. I thought one side played with a lot more energy and control than the other side.

"The best team won and we have to cop this one on the chin.

"Over the last weeks at times when we haven't been playing particularly well, we've always kept working hard for one another, but there were a few tell-tale signs like one-on-one misses out there.

"It was a pretty flat performance but I don't want to do any injustices to the opposition who I thought were very good."
