Hull (12) 12 Tries: Whiting 2 Goals: Hall 2
Wakefield (4) 8 Tries: Millard, Blanch
Whiting touches down for his first try in Hull's 12-8 win over Wakefield
Richard Whiting scored twice as Hull made light of their lengthy injury list to run out winners against Wakefield. The Black and Whites were without seven first-teamers and fell behind when Daryl Millard dived on the loose ball after Ben Jeffries's high kick. But Whiting finished a patient move to go over under the posts before jumping higher than Luke George to claim a Richard Horne kick for his second. Defences were on top after the break before Damien Blanch scored late on. Wakefield elected not to kick at goal in favour of going in search of a potentially match-winning try in the seconds that were left, but Hull's defence stayed strong as they held out for victory. Worryingly for the Wildcats, first-half try scorer Millard was helped off the field midway through the second half with suspected knee ligament damage. Victory for Hull ended a run of three straight defeats, including back-to-back losses to Leeds in league and cup, while Wakefield have now lost four in a row.
Hull FC coach Richard Agar: "The blokes that were prepared to dig in when it was tough made the victory for us. "Richard Whiting made a couple of mistakes but he does the simple things well. He's got a great read of the game and we can play him in a number of different positions. "Some of his colleagues could probably look at his application and improve themselves a little bit." Wakefield coach John Kear: "I thought there were two teams that gave a magnificent defensive effort and worked hard for each other. "The fans pay to see people be proud in wearing the shirt and they saw that in bucketfuls on both sides. "I thought we got a bit anxious with the ball. Our nine, seven and six got anxious and affected our ends of sets and big plays. You could not fault the effort."
