Leeds 18-20 Wigan
Wigan's Phil Bailey
Bailey's late try takes Wigan to fourth place in the table

Leeds: (4) 18
Tries: Senior, Burrow, Ellis
Goals: Sinfield 3

Wigan: (8) 20
Tries: Fletcher, Calderwood, Bailey
Goals: Richards 3, Vaealiki

A last-gasp try from Phil Bailey snatched victory for Wigan in a thrilling encounter at Headingley.

Wigan, who led 8-4 at the break, shrugged off Stuart Fielden's sin-binning to storm into a 16-4 lead after 51 minutes.

A full-blooded response took Leeds 18-16 ahead, thanks to superb tries from Rob Burrow and Gareth Ellis.

But an ill-advised offload from Rhinos centre Keith Senior with a minute left gave Bailey the chance to win the game.

The match brought the hectic Easter period to a close, but there was no let-up in intensity from either side.

Wigan opened the scoring through Pat Richards's eighth-minute penalty, but it was Leeds who crossed for the first try just three minutes later.

Burrow worked a run-around with full-back Brent Webb and Senior proved unstoppable from 10 metres out as he barged through Bailey to score.

Wigan hit back on 24 minutes when Bryan Fletcher won the race to Thomas Leuluai's incisive grubber kick, and the try sparked an exhilarating period of play in which both sides created - and spurned - several opportunities.

A clean break by Kevin Sinfield should have ended in a Leeds score, while it was a similar story when Wigan's Michael Withers broke clear.

But the impressive attacking play was marred by several high shots as tempers flared, and Fielden paid the price by being sin-binned just before half-time for interference at the tackle.

Wigan made light of their numerical disadvantage to stretch their lead after half-time through former Leeds favourite Mark Calderwood after another delicate Leuluai kick.

David Vaealiki's conversion was swiftly followed by a Richards penalty as Wigan took an imposing 16-4 lead.

But the outstanding Burrow narrowed the gap with an excellent score after dummying a pass to Webb and bursting through the wrong-footed Fielden's tackle.

Soon after, Ellis powered onto a lovely inside pass from Sinfield to make the score 16-14, and the Leeds skipper kicked the conversion to level the scores.

Sinfield's 68th-minutre penalty edged his side in front, and Gareth Hock's simultaneous sin-binning looked to have put Leeds in complete control.

The Rhinos failed to keep their cool though, with Clinton Toopi dropping the ball over the tryline.

The home team looked to have got away with it when Fielden knocked on with four minutes to go to relieve some fierce Wigan pressure - but Senior's moment of madness let the Warriors back in.

Running the ball out of defence, it should have been "up the jumper" time for Leeds, but Senior attempted an offload which went straight into touch, and from the resulting possession Wigan went through the phases to give Bailey just enough space to score in the corner.

The win catapults the Warriors to fourth place in the table, while Leeds missed out on the chance to go top.

  • Leeds coach Tomy Smith on Keith Senior's late mistake:

"We are all in it together. We feel for Keith and he is probably feeling a bit bad at the moment but that's what being in a team is all about.

"We'll look out for him. We know that Keith has done a lot of good things for us.

"We got in a position to win the game without playing very well. I thought Wigan outplayed us. They were more energetic and deserved to win the game."

  • Wigan coach Brian Noble:

"With 10 minutes to go and a man down, a lot of teams would have thrown the towel in but we showed great character.

"The game lasts for 80 minutes but I thought we'd blown it. We got another opportunity and managed to find the right passing movement.

"You have to be patient and persevere. I thought we deserved it on balance."
