Bradford 14-18 Leeds
Brent Webb challenges Iestyn Harris
Webb (left) was placed on report for this challenge

Bradford: (10) 14
Tries: St Hilaire, Vainikolo
Goals: Deacon (3)

Leeds: (6) 18
Tries: Donald (2), Ellis
Goals: Sinfield (3)

Tries at the start and finish by Scott Donald snatched victory for Leeds at Bradford to put them top of the table.

Donald's persistence gave Leeds an early try but when Brent Webb was sin-binned Glenn Morrison sent Marcus St Hilaire over in the corner.

Lesley Vainikolo thundered over after the re-start but quick thinking by Gareth Ellis kept Leeds in the game.

At the death Jamie Peacock and Danny McGuire combined well to set up Donald to dive over in the left-hand corner.

Bradford began well, with Paul Deacon notching two goals, and Iestyn Harris was only denied a good try-scoring chance by a high challenge which saw Webb put on report.

606: DEBATE

Leeds struck back when Donald did superbly to wriggle out of St Hilaire's grasp and touch down after a strong charge by Keith Senior, and that seemed to rock Bradford back on their heels.

St Hilaire made the most of Leeds being a man short when Webb was sin-binned as he made amends for his error by diving over to score in the corner.

David Solomona's strength set up a move rounded off by Vainikolo to stretch the Bulls' lead just after the restart.

But Ellis put Leeds back in contention as he was quickest to react and touch down after Rob Burrow's kick through.

And Burrow was key to the match-clinching try, with his breakaway setting up the move which ended with Donald touching down in the corner.

  • Bradford coach Steve McNamara:
  • "I think both coaches should be proud of their teams, it was one of the best games of rugby this season.

"I'm just really pleased that we've got our form back after a rusty couple of weeks. I'm disappointed we've lost but it's not the end of the world.

"The result was tough and we got our fingers burnt but that's the drama of sport."

  • Leeds coach Tony Smith:
  • "The standard, particularly in defence, by both teams was unbelievable. Every point had to be earned.

"I wouldn't have been too disappointed, with the effort my boys put in, if we had lost that game.

"I thought Jamie Peacock was absolutely terrific, it was one of his best games in a Leeds uniform."
