Wellens is a multiple award winner |
Paul Wellens received more recognition for his outstanding season when he was named the Rugby League Writers' Association (RLWA) Player of the Year. The St Helens full-back has already been named Man of Steel and the Super League players' player of the year.
He also won the Harry Sunderland Trophy as man of the match in his side's 26-4 Grand Final win over Hull FC.
Wellens, 26, flew out to Australia on Tuesday to join up with Great Britain's squad for the Tri-Nations Series.
Wellens was also named as full-back in the Super League Dream Team for the second successive season.
The RLWA also honoured former Wakefield MP David Hinchliffe with its order of merit for services to the game.
Hinchliffe was a driving force behind the All Party Parliamentary Rugby League Group which helped break down the barriers with rugby union.
A special award was also made to Keith Macklin to mark his 50 years in broadcasting at the association's annual dinner in Leeds.
