Wakefield: (14) 17
Tries: Rooney, Tadulala, Halpenny
Goals: Rooney 2
Drops: Rooney
Jamie Rooney's last-minute drop-goal gave struggling Wakefield a vital win and inflicted a third consecutive Super League defeat on Warrington.

Logan Swann scored an early try for the Wolves but Wakefield tries from David Solomona, Rooney and Colum Halpenny put them 14-8 up at the break.

Mark Gleeson's try pulled Warrington level before Rooney's 20-metre strike.

Worse for Warrington, Lee Briers had a chance to win the match in injury time but put his penalty wide of the posts.

It was a just reward for Wakefield, who had defended manfully for the majority of the game.

The crowd at the Halliwell Jones Stadium left the Warrington players in no doubt of their displeasure at the result, roundly booing their team off the pitch.

  • Warrington coach Paul Cullen:
"If (Briers' kick) had gone over then we would have, quite simply and obviously, deserved to win the game - but it didn't.

"Lee Briers has won us more games than he has lost us and that's just one of those unfortunate situations.

"We've got to be big enough to take it and I'm sure we are.

"It's a real test of your character and ability when things aren't going your way.

"We just need to keep working hard and being patient and it will come back."

  • Wakefield coach Tony Smith:
"It would have been a travesty and a complete injustice if we had lost the game.

"The effort, enthusiasm and desire - everything that I asked of the players - was there today.

"I thought we were magnificent in defence and despite all the decisions and everything else going against us, we didn't chat back to the referee.

"We just got on with it and that's what I'm really pleased about."
