Leeds closed the gap on St Helens at the top of Super League, despite a late comeback from Harlequins.

Leeds led 36-12 through tries from Danny McGuire, Willie Poching, Matt Diskin (2), Scott Donald and Jamie Peacock and six goals from Rob Burrow.

But Harlequins hit back to cut the gap to 36-24 through Mark McLinden and Luke Dorn, adding to earlier tries by McLinden and Tyrone Smith.

Henry Paul added four goals for Quins but Leeds held on to clinch the points.

Paul, starting his first game for the visitors, was prominent in the early stages as Quins made the livelier start.

The Rhinos were not at their best five days after their 44-16 mauling by Warrington but eventually broke through when McGuire touched down for his 17th try of the season.

Poching was then set up by scrum-half Rob Burrow before McLinden responded and Paul's conversion gave the Londoners hope at 12-6 after 30 minutes.

McGuire turned provider for Diskin, who made it two tries in four minutes and Burrow kicked his fourth conversion.

The visitors' defence cracked again when the ball was worked wide for right winger Donald to squeeze over at the corner.

Burrow landed the touchline goal to maintain his 100% record with the boot to make the game seemingly safe at 30-6.

But Quins pulled a second try back on 50 minutes when Mark Tookey's kick forward was palmed back by Bradley-Qualilawa for centre Smith to touch down and Paul kicked his second goal.

Leeds emphasised their superiority when acting captain Jamie Peacock burst through to score their sixth try but Harlequins again responded.

McLinden grabbed his second before half-back Luke Dorn dashed over six minutes from time with Paul kicking his fourth conversion.

  • Leeds coach Tony Smith:
"I can understand our side being a bit flat. This game is not made for players to play four days after the last one but they did remarkably well.

"They shouldn't have to be put through that. I can't be critical of my players.

"They rolled up their sleeves and did the best they could."

  • Harlequins coach Tony Rae:
"I thought Henry (Paul) was outstanding. For his first full game and only his second game back, he showed his quality.

"It's now a question of the team getting used to playing with him.

"We showed really good fight in the second half and I was pleased to see the guys rallying but we paid for a slow start."
