Leeds put Friday's home defeat to Bradford behind them by overcoming Super League surprise package Salford. The Rhinos opened the scoring with a Gareth Ellis try but a converted Simon Finnegan score put the Reds in front.
Leeds had to withstand a barrage of pressure but regained the lead before half-time through Jamie Jones-Buchanan.
Richie Mathers, Danny McGuire, from 80m, and Danny Williams added further scores, Finnegan replying before John Wilshere's try set up a frantic finish.
Salford threw everything at the Rhinos in the closing stages but Mathers bravely caught a chip-kick under pressure to seal victory.
The only concern for Leeds was the sight of McGuire limping off with an ankle injury after his try.
But victory moved the visitors two points clear of Salford as they continued their pursuit of leaders St Helens.
Salford coach Karl Harrison:
"There was a blatant knock on from Jamie Peacock before Leeds' first try and Ashley Gibson had his foot in touch in the build-up to the second and the touch judge was only two feet away.
"Then we had a 40-20 turned down near the end. I was sat close to match commissioner David Campbell in the stand but the referee didn't change his mind.
"Both teams were struggling and were under pressure from fatigue after playing on Friday."
Leeds coach Tony Smith:
"We conceded twice as many penalties as Salford and we have to improve our discipline.
"We knew Salford were a good side and they deserve to be where they are at the moment."
