A late try by Brett Ferres secured victory for Bradford in a dramatic Super League encounter at Headingley.

In what could well be coach Brian Noble's last match in charge before he joins Wigan, Bradford made a storming start before Leeds recovered.

Two tries from Iestyn Harris and Marcus Bai looked to have turned the game Bradford's way just on the hour mark.

But a Richie Mathers try put Leeds in control before Ferres struck in the dying seconds to secure the win.

Stanley Gene gave the injury-hit Bulls the best possible opening with a try before Gareth Ellis latched onto a superb Jamie Jones-Buchanan offload to level matters shortly before the break.

Boosted by the try, the Rhinos began the second half strongly with Rob Burrow evading a couple of tackles to go over and give them the lead in a tough encounter.

Ex-Leeds players Harris and Bai looked to have given the Bulls a firm grip on the game when they went over in the space of four minutes.

But the Rhinos refused to give up and Danny McGuire's high kick caused problems for the Bradford defence, allowing Danny Williams to tip the ball back to Mathers for an easy try.

Although Burrow missed the resulting kick, he made amends soon after with a penalty after Bradford substitute Adam Watene was punished for a high tackle on Chris Feather and his effort looked to have given Leeds victory.

But, in virtually the last attack of the match, Paul Deacon spun the ball wide and Ferres, who turns 20 on Monday, grabbed an early birthday present by slipping through a gap for his first try of the season and the points.

  • Leeds coach Tony Smith:

"I don't think we deserved to win. Bradford were better than us and they found a way to win.

"It was a very entertaining game for the neutrals but we are very disappointed. It is not a happy dressing room. "But I don't want to take anything away from Bradford, who were terrific."

  • Bradford coach Brian Noble:

"I thought Leeds were as good as us but we showed enough desire at the end.

"I'd like to compliment both teams for a spectacle. People who paid money to watch tonight got their money's worth three times over.

"It was breathless and I really enjoyed it, which I don't normally do as a coach."
