Wigan had beaten Wakefield in the Challenge Cup on Sunday but were unable to prevent the Wildcats taking revenge.

Sam Obst, Michael Korkidas, Jamie Rooney, Colum Halpenny, Jon Whittle and Jason Demetriou crossed for the hosts while Jamie Rooney kicked eight goals.

Wigan responded with tries from Brett Dallas (2) and Kevin Brown.

Wigan coach Ian Millward:
"We had a 43% completion rate in the first half and that's like going to war with guns but no bullets.

"We gave them too much ball. The second half was 8-8, but overall we weren't good enough to win the game.

"We were not consistent in the simple things, and we lacked some experience and some direction. Until we get that right, we're not going to win."

Wakefield coach Tony Smith:

"I'm really pleased for the boys in the changing room, we've gone through a difficult six weeks.

"No-one who has come to Wakefield this season has said they're a bad team, they're just not getting the wins, but let's see what happens from now.

"But we knew at the back of our minds this was the most important game of the season, playing Wigan who were level on points with us.
