Wigan were given a huge fright before eventually overcoming Challenge Cup finalists Huddersfield to ease their relegation concerns.
Danny Orr's late try five minutes from time calmed the nerves for Wigan, who looked well below par for much of the game with a string of errors.
The Giants showed great determination against the Warriors with Kevin Brown giving his side a first-half lead.
Bryan Fletcher responded but in a tight game it was Orr's try which was vital.
Huddersfield coach Jon Sharp (on referee Karl Kirkpatrick) "We felt we were playing against 14 people. I'm pretty pumped up about it and the players are devastated and I will be speaking to the powers that be.
"I thought the attitude was fantastic and you couldn't say the cup final was on anyone's mind.
"I thought they put their bodies on the line and were very good."
Wigan coach Brian Noble "We didn't play the conditions particularly well and we made a tough game even tougher.
"The desire defensively was superb but it had to be."
