A blistering first-half display swept Wigan to their first win of the season.

First-half tries by Chris Ashton, Kevin Brown, Iafeta Paleaaesina, Harrison Hansen and Brett Dallas effectively killed off the match before the break.

Chris Nero scored for the Giants just before half-time but the Giants had left themselves far too much to do.

James Evans cut the gap further, but Wayne Godwin's try for Wigan made late Giants scores from Albert Torrens and Michael de Vere mere consolation.

After defeats to the Catalans Dragons and Leeds, the Warriors had been one loss away from their worst start to a season in 21 years.

But they got off to a superb start with three tries in the opening 10 minutes.

Ashton's pace took him clear for the first try, while Dennis Moran's brilliant break and kick ahead allowed Brown to score the second.

Hansen took advantage of some feeble tackling for the third try as Huddersfield looked in desperation for some possession.

It got worse, though, with Paleaaesina crashing over from close range, while Dallas' finishing touch supplied the fifth after a flowing move.

The Giants saved some face with Nero's try just before the break, and Evans went over shortly after the start of the second half to move nearer Wigan's imposing total.

But Paul March's sin-binning put an end to any hopes of a comeback, with Godwin crossing for Wigan soon after.

Torrens and De Vere replied for Huddersfield in the closing stages but the result was already beyond doubt.

Wigan coach Ian Millward:

"There was no pressure - if we'd lost and played well, I'd have known there are still 25 games to go.

"I haven't been kicking the door in, I haven't been upset. I've been happy with the progress we've been making.

"We're making good progress, there's a short-term and long-term strategy. I'm happy with the way things are going."

Huddersfield coach Jon Sharp:

"We struggled to get the ball, and I thought Wigan's completion and their ability to kick their sets out made it difficult to get the ball back.

"We challenged the boys at half time because we let ourselves down in large facets of the game and never gave ourselves an opportunity.

"We had a heart-to-heart at half time and they responded magnificently. The disappointing thing is we needed to get 30 points behind before we had a crack at them."
