Three tries in six minutes midway through the first half put St Helens in complete control against Wakefield. The visitors levelled through Steve Snitch after Willie Talau put Saints ahead, before Ade Gardner, Talau and James Roby struck in quick succession.
An Andy Kirk score kept the Wildcats in touch, but Darren Albert and Mark Edmondson stretched the Saints lead early in the second half.
More tries for Albert and Roby and James Lyon's kicks wrapped up the win.
"It was a fantastic game from a Saints perspective," said St Helens coach Ian Millward.
"I felt that there has been some improvement every week and that has got to
be our best performance so far.
"But I've got to compliment Wakefield, who scored three very good tries.
"Obviously some balls stuck and it was a delight for me. I think the scoreline reflected how much skill there was on view."
Saints scored 40 of their points without the services of captain Paul Sculthorpe, who was rested at half-time ahead of the Easter clashes with Wigan and Bradford.
"We took the chance to give him a break," explained Millward. "We've got
two big games coming up."
Wakefield coach Shane McNally said: "We could have lived with them if we had been a bit more conscientious with the ball.
"Saints were awesome and we were poor. When Saints are in that sort of form
they are very dangerous. We weren't good enough to match it with them.
"You live and learn. We need to do a bit of self-examination but we'll bounce
back."
