Wigan chairman Maurice Lindsay has given his full backing to new coach Ian Millward after the club suffered a record 70-0 defeat at Leeds. "My sympathies are with the fans and also with Ian," said Lindsay.
"From what I've seen of him, he's an absolutely brilliant coach but he's working under difficult circumstances.
"It's not poor selection or poor training, simply the fact that three-quarters of the side got wiped out for various reasons."
Coach Ian Millward was without six regulars through injury and had teenagers James Coyle and Dave Allen making their first Super League starts in Leeds.
"The truth is that Ian has got very few players to pick from," said Lindsay, who addressed Wigan fans after the match.
"You can't kid yourself that you can wipe out virtually an entire team and still play to the best of your ability.
"Super League is too competitive for that.
"It exposes you if you have got any weaknesses and, at the moment, for very sound reasons, there are weaknesses."
