Harris puts record straight

By Iestyn Harris
Dual-code international

I was a little bit disappointed with the comments Jonathan Davies made last week about my move back to rugby league.

I've spoken with Jonathan, I'm good friends with him and I certainly won't be falling out with him over it.

But it was disappointing to read what he said when Jonathan could have got the facts easily enough off me.

With the contracts involved being so complex it was very difficult to handle it any other way.

It's that complex that I don't even understand it, so it needed to be handled legally as it was a delicate situation.

The legal situation had to be done before I spoke to anyone on a level playing field.

I've spoken to Dai Young at Cardiff and I'm still on good terms with him, and obviously I haven't had a chance to speak with Wales coach Mike Ruddock and people like that because they were on the tour.

You can't sell a car and then say in three years' time you want it back, it doesn't work like that

Things had to be done through the proper channels and I never, never intended to put anyone's face out or back up, or anything like that.

It was just the way it had to be done.

The way my contract stood with Cardiff and Wales was for three years with a fourth year option, which I didn't take.

I said I wouldn't be taking up the option in September, so it was silly me being at Cardiff and Wales in the summer with them paying my wages when there was no games.

So it was pretty much agreed that I would go early, start with Bradford and have them pay my wages.

It was in the process of being agreed when Cardiff released the statement that my contract had been terminated - which was a very legal way of saying it, but I was disappointed with the way it was said.

I know that Leeds Rhinos chief executive Gary Hetherington has been very vocal in the press about me joining Bradford, a lot of it which I think - and my advisers think - was pretty uncalled for.

When the contract was initially done over three years ago, Leeds received a payment of something like 850,000 - which is a massive payment.

They terminated my contract from then, so for Leeds to feel they had an opportunity to have me back is a little bit silly - when you terminate a contract you can't put clauses in.

Once a contract has been terminated it's been terminated for good.

It's like selling a car, you can't sell a car and then say in three years' time you want it back, it doesn't work like that.

There is something down in writing which was forced by Leeds at the time for me to sign, but it's not a legal and upstanding contract and it's certainly not a rugby league contract.

I had a fantastic five years at Leeds and I have a lot of friends there, but I felt the right place for me was Bradford and I've got a four-and-a-half year contract that will take me up towards the end of my career.

Iestyn Harris enjoyed his debut for the Bradford Bulls

A lot of the reasons why I wanted to go back to rugby league and back to the north were family issues.

We loved our three years in Wales and I love the game of rugby union, international level is fantastic!

But we've got a three-year-old daughter who is starting to miss her grandparents and her family, her cousins.

I had a couple of offers from Zurich Premiership clubs in the north and it was very tempting, but I felt that if I was coming back north then rugby league - which I've played since I was eight - was the only choice.

I regret nothing of what I did in rugby union, I've played in the Six Nations and a World Cup, made some fantastic friends and enjoyed every minute of it.

I hope the Lions tour next year goes well for everybody and they get a result in New Zealand.

I'd have loved to have been part of it if I'd been playing well enough, but I'm really happy with my decision.

I enjoyed the 30 minutes back in Super League I got against Wakefield on Sunday and hopefully this week I can get some more and get into my stride.
