Broncos hail 'prop idol' search
London Broncos fans
Broncos fans could soon be cheering a new star
London Broncos could turn their "prop idol" competition into an annual event following the success of their initial trials.

The Super League side held regional sessions at eight venues across the country on Sunday in a bid to discover a potential star.

And Broncos development manager Phil Jones told BBC Sport Online the club was impressed by the calibre of player that turned out.

"We have unearthed some interesting people, with good athletic ability, despite the fact it was pretty cold on Sunday," he said.

"We have also established some good contacts around the country and are already talking about it making an annual thing."

The Broncos have asked between 50 and 60 players to attend a second session on Sunday.

That number will then be halved before three players are invited to train with the senior squad as part of the final selection process.

The trio will also get the chance to play in a pre-season friendly against Warrington at Wilderspool on 2 February.

The Broncos originally planned to hand just one player a professional contract.

But Jones said that if two or three really caught the eye, coach Tony Rea may decide to retain more than one.

"If the second-best player was a real talent, then it would be down to Tony to decide whether to keep him or not," said Jones.

Players from England, Wales, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand attempted to woo the selectors on Sunday.

"We were looking at speed, size and agility," said Jones.

"It may be called 'prop idol' but that was just to generate some publicity. We don't mind what position they play in."
