Castleford Tigers full-back Richard Gay has confirmed his retirement after being sidelined by illness for much of the season.

Gay was diagnosed as having a brain tumour, although it was found to be benign and he is expected to make a full recovery.

The 33-year-old had already decided to leave the Jungle at the end of the season and considered playing in the Northern Ford Premiership so he could study for a degree.

The decision to retire from the game that I love was very hard indeed

But after 15 years as a professional Gay decided the time was right to call it quits, even though he admits the decision was a tough one to make.

"I would like to take this opportunity to offer my sincere thanks to all the staff and supporters of Castleford Tigers who have supported me over the last seven marvellous years.

"Your support both on and off the field has made my time a wonderful experience," said Gay, who has spent seven years with the Tigers.

"After 15 years of playing professional rugby league, the decision to retire from the game that I love was very hard indeed.

"But I know that with the support of my family and friends I shall be able to look to the future with a great deal of hope and optimism.

"I have received great cards and words of encouragement from many of you and I very much appreciate your very kind thoughts and wishes."
