El Masri is a devastating finisher |
Prolific scorer Hazem El Masri has been added to Australia's training squad
for next month's Tri-Nations series. The Lebanon-born winger, scorer of more than 1,800 points for Canterbury, was one of six Bulldogs players added after their exit from the NRL play-offs.
He is joined by Willie Mason, Mark O'Meley, Reni Maitua, Nate Myles and Andrew Ryan.
Five players from St George Illawarra, also knocked out, were added but Jason Ryles is ruled out with a wrist injury.
Mark Gasnier, Matt Cooper, Ben Hornby, Luke Bailey and Ben Creagh are the five who join the squad, which will be finalised next Monday, 2 October, after the NRL Grand Final between Brisbane and Melbourne.
Players from Manly and Newcastle were previously added to the party after their elimination a week ago.
Uncapped winger Nathan Merritt was named in the Kangaroos' initial squad, but several big names were left out.
Full-back Matt Bowen, scrum-half Brett Kimmorley, winger Luke Rooney and utility player Craig Wing were all surplus to requirements.
Merritt finished the NRL season as leading try-scorer despite playing for the struggling South Sydney Rabbitohs.
Sydney Roosters skipper and Australia goalkicker Craig Fitzgibbon was called up despite being booked in for ankle surgery.
Former Leigh forward Craig Stapleton was also a surprise inclusion, while 2005 Golden Boot winner Anthony Minichiello was not considered due to injury.
Parramatta trio Nathan Hindmarsh, Eric Grothe and Jarryd Hayne were added to the squad after they were eliminated from the play-offs, but there was no room for any Canberra players when they were knocked out.
The squad, which began training on 13 September, covers the Tri-Nations series against New Zealand and Great Britain, and also a game between a Prime Minister's XIII and Papua New Guinea on 30 September.
Kangaroos legend and Queensland coach Mal Meninga will coach the Prime Minister's XIII.
In last year's Tri-Nations final, New Zealand pulled off a shock 24-0 win over Australia, and the teams renew their rivalry in Auckland on 14 October.
Great Britain's first game is against the Kiwis in Christchurch two weeks later, with the final in Sydney on 25 November.
