Great Britain coach Brian Noble says Tuesday's 46-14 win over New Zealand in a one-off Test shows the need for regular non-club matches. He said the Lions' record win over the Kiwis on home soil would help in the build-up to autumn's internationals.
"The Aussies get the Origin concept and the Anzac Test. We needed a meaningful fixture and we had it," he said.
"That is as fluent as we have been. It shows how much international football means for the players."
Things began poorly for the home side as Bradford's Lesley Vainikolo opened the scoring for New Zealand after just two minutes, but the Lions hit back to score eight tries in an impressive performance.
New Zealand coach Brian McClennan's team only had two training sessions before the game but Noble was keen to revel in the positives for his side and to look ahead to the autumn's Tri-Nations series.
"That was a fiery encounter at times. I am really delighted with what we came up with," he said.
"That's not a bad New Zealand side we played.
"In years gone past we have conceded a few more points and to say we conceded two tries from errors is a reflection of how well we defended.
"It will be tough down there.
"We now need to show the same attitude we have in two days over six weeks."
