Webcke was granted life membership of the Brisbane Broncos in 2003 |
Former Australia prop Shane Webcke has announced that he will quit the sport at the end of the season. The 31-year-old joined the Brisbane Broncos in 1994 and has gone on to play 243 National Rugby League matches.
"During this last pre-season campaign I felt so good on the training track that I had almost convinced myself that I could go another year," he said.
"But once the footy started the reality of the wear and tear on my body hit home and there was no other decision."
Webcke retired from the international game after the 2004 Tri-Nations final and appeared in 20 Tests and 21 State of Origin games for Queensland.
During his time with the Broncos he won the Premiership in 1997, 1998 and 2000.
"Shane Webcke has been the backbone of this club," said Broncos managing director Bruno Cullen.
