New South Wales retained their State of Origin crown with a record-breaking victory over Queensland in Brisbane.

Winger Matt King scored a hat-trick of tries as the Blues eclipsed their previous best win on Queensland soil.

The Blues, with Andrew Johns once again in top form, bagged a total of six tries, with further scores from Braith Anasta, Mark Gasnier and Timana Tahu.

Queensland scored late tries through Johnathan Thurston and Matt Bowen but lost the three-game series 2-1.

NSW, who lost the first Origin match in Brisbane before winning the second in Sydney, had to repel Queensland in the opening eight minutes.

But the visitors, whose previous biggest victory in Queensland came in 2000 when they won 28-10 at Lang Park, recovered to score three tries before the break to effectively kill the game as a contest.

Craig Fitzgibbon opened the scoring with a ninth-minute penalty to put NSW 2-0 up.

Anasta scored the game's first try on 21 minutes before Gasnier leaped highest to collect a crossfield kick from Johns for try number two on 27 minutes.

Johns converted both scores but missed after King, playing in his first Origin series, had crossed for his first touchdown of the match four minutes later.

NSW increased their lead to 24-0 seven minutes into the second half when King added his second try, with Johns kicking the conversion.

Timanu Tahu scored seven minutes later and King completed his hat-trick with 15 minutes left.

Queensland scored two late tries to avoid losing a game without scoring for the first time since 1994.

The win gives the Blues a 37-36 overall lead, plus two draws, in 75 matches since 1980 and a third straight series win.
