Australia's National Rugby League will grow to 16 teams in 2007 following the announcement of Gold Coast's return. Seeing off rival bids from NSW Central Coast and Wellington, the Gold Coast rejoins the league they left in 1998.
"This is a tremendous opportunity for rugby league and for the Gold Coast," said NRL chief executive David Gallop.
"Following the success of the North Queensland Cowboys and the Brisbane Broncos, it's an opportune time to bring in a third Queensland team."
The team will play their first NRL season at Carrara Stadium before moving to a purpose-built 25,000-seat stadium.
Sydney Roosters assistant coach John Cartwright has already been appointed as their head coach.
