Wellens damaged knee ligaments in the win over New Zealand |
Great Britain full-back Paul Wellens has been ruled out of the rest of the Tri-Nations after damaging knee ligaments in the win over New Zealand. Richard Horne or Leon Pryce look set to wear the number one shirt against Australia after the Lions said they would not be calling up a replacement.
"It is a blow and disappointing for Paul," said assistant coach Jon Sharp.
Paul Deacon is also out but Brian Carney "looks on schedule" to be fit for Saturday's last group game in Hull.
Sharp revealed that Great Britain have already begun planning for life without Wellens.
"We've discussed it and we've practised with people in various positions," said the Huddersfield Giants coach.
If Pryce is moved to full-back and Carney fails to prove his fitness, the Lions will need to find two new wingers for the clash with Australia.
Hull's Gareth Raynor could get his debut while new Wigan signing Mark Calderwood has also been drafted into the squad.
With Deacon missing, Great Britain boss Brian Noble will also need to pick a new scrum-half.
Horne is in the running for that role, as is Wigan's Micky Higham and Leeds duo Rob Burrow and Kevin Sinfield.
Winger Carney came off during last week's win at Huddersfield after feeling in a twinge in his troublesome hamstring, but it was a pre-emptive move before he suffered any serious injury.
"He is progressing nicely and looks on schedule," said Sharp.
"It's important to see how he reacts on Wednesday and Thursday before we make a final decision."
