Benji Marshall has an on-going shoulder problem |
Australian National Rugby League Grand Final stars Benji Marshall and Dene Halatau have been named in a 40-man New Zealand squad ahead of the Tri-Nations. But Kiwis' coach Brian McClennan said he did not know if the Wests Tigers duo would play as they have been told to have shoulder operations by their club.
New Zealand are expected to add some English-based players after the Super League Grand Final on 15 October.
They include Lesley Vainikolo (Bradford) and Ali Lauitiiti (Leeds).
Their clubs are still involved in the Super League play-offs, hence the delay in them being named.
Two props who are heading to Super League clubs - Paul Rauhihi (Warrington) and Iafeta Palea'aesina (Wigan) - have already been included.
Marshall was one of the stars of the show as Wests Tigers beat North Queensland Cowboys 30-16 to win the NRL title on Sunday.
"It's important for Benji to rule himself in or out," said McClennan, who added he had not had a chance to speak to Marshall since the Tigers' win.
Halatau is due to see a specialist on Wednesday and McClennan said his availability should be known once he has received the results of a scan.
The 40-man squad contains players for the up-coming Tri-Nations and also for the New Zealand A team.
