Wakefield Trinity Wildcats (0) 6 Tries: Veivers Goals: Veivers Crusaders (6) 40 Tries: Withers, White 2, Reardon, Mellars, James, Kear Goals: Schifcofske 3, Witt 2, Martin
White has played for Crusaders in all their three Super League seasons |
Lloyd White scored two tries as Crusaders ended a disastrous week with a victory over Wakefield. Lincoln Withers, Stuart Reardon, Vince Mellars, Jordan James and Elliot Kear also crossed for Crusaders, who drop out of Super League after this season. Clinton Schifcofske (3), Michael Witt (2) and Tony Martin also kicked goals for the Welsh side. Josh Veivers scored the Wildcats' six points with a converted try to end a topsy-turvy week on a low. Wakefield's league status was saved by Crusaders' withdrawal of their licence application before the announcement that coach John Kear will leave at the season's end. Crusaders, whose squad face uncertain futures, broke the deadlock after 34 minutes when Elliot Kear's pass bounced kindly for Withers to run under the posts. Two minutes into the second half, White went over from a Witt pass and he was in the right place again when Withers set him up. | The team looked as if they didn't care and they weren't trying Wakefield coach John Kear on their display against Crusaders |
The Welsh side were dominant and Tony Martin broke through to release Reardon on the right for another touchdown. The Wildcats got on the scoreboard as Jeremy Smith caught his own kick and put over Veivers, who added the extras in front of the posts. But any hopes of a comeback were extinguished when Mellars went over from close range, before James crashed over and Elliot Kear used good speed to cross the line on the left. The result means Crusaders are now just two points below Wakefield in the battle to avoid the wooden spoon. POST-MATCH REACTION Wakefield coach John Kear: "The first half was acceptable because it was competitive but the second half was woeful. "You can see why the spectators were disgruntled. I can't argue with that because if I'd paid money I'd have been very disgruntled. "The team looked as if they didn't care and they weren't trying. "We have reacted in a surreal way to a surreal week. "There are some players out of contract and looking to stay here or move elsewhere but they won't do it playing like that." Crusaders coach Iestyn Harris: "I would just like to thank all the players for their efforts in really difficult circumstances. "They did themselves and their families proud. "In regards to a statement from us, we have got a meeting with the RFL this week and then off the back of that we will be making a statement or press conference at the back end of this week coming up."
