Sam Tomkins has now run in six hat-tricks in his Wigan Warriors career

In-form Sam Tomkins led the way with a stunning hat-trick as Wigan hammered Huddersfield 46-12 at the DW Stadium.

Giants winger David Hodgson quickly cancelled out Tomkins' first try.

But classy Wigan ran in four more prior to the break, another for Tomkins being followed by tries for Thomas Leuluai, George Carmont and Pat Richards.

Josh Charnley and Lee Mossop crossed after the break before a Danny Kirmond consolation, but Tomkins had the last word, added to Richards' seven kicks.

Richards' 18-point haul rounded off an excellent display by Wigan, who rattled up eight tries as they ended a run of three straight victories for Huddersfield at the DW Stadium.

In a battle of third v second, Michael Maguire's men leapfrogged Huddersfield in the table after completing the double over the Giants, who they also beat 20-6 at the Galpharm back in March.

It proved to be Huddersfield's heaviest Super League defeat since Nathan Brown took charge in early 2009 - a bad day which began going wrong well before kick-off when their coach broke down on the motorway and they were forced to continue their journey in taxis.

To add to the home smiles, Wigan forward Gareth Hock came off the bench for his first appearance since the completion of his two-year drugs ban earlier this year.

Wigan coach Michael Maguire was delighted with 27-year-old Hock, whose two-year ban for cocaine use ran out 48 hours before kick-off.

He received a rapturous reception from the bumper 19,169 crowd at the DW Stadium when introduced as a substitute 24 minutes in, playing a total of 30 minutes in two spells. But, following on from last weekend's stunning 32-10 derby win at St Helens, such was Wigan's dominance against a Huddersfield side badly missing the injured Danny Brough that they hardly needed a major contribution from the England forward.

POST-MATCH VERDICTS

Wigan coach Michael Maguire:

"It's been a good couple of weeks for us. There was a good crowd and we wanted to put on a good performance for them.

"To back up from last week was very pleasing. They're a quality team and we knew we had to be up for them. We did our homework on them.

"I thought Gareth Hock showed a lot of signs out there and I'm looking forward to working with him. He ran the ball extremely hard. Obviously he knows he's got a long way to go but he did a great job in his first stint and came back and did the same."

Huddersfield coach Nathan Brown:

"We were well beaten in every facet of the game. We can't offer any excuse. We've been getting away with parts of our game now for six to eight weeks and today we played a very good side who are very well coached.

"We need to coach a bit better in some areas and the players need to improve in some areas. That game has been coming and sometimes it takes a result like that for all of us to put our hands up and say we aren't getting better and we need to get better."

"Wigan have got some terrific players. Sean O'Loughlin is comfortably the best British player in the game. When they dominate so easy he can control the game very well."
