David Hodgson ran in a hat-trick as Huddersfield moved back level on points with Super League leaders Warrington.

Giants led 10-8 at the break thanks to tries for Michael Lawrence and Hodgson, Hull's Ewan Dowes scoring in between.

Hodgson made it a treble either side of a Mark O'Meley try for Hull, who got it back to 20-22 through Willie Manu.

But a late interception try from Danny Brough, who kicked 10 points, sealed victory for the Giants, Lee Gilmour's close-range effort icing the cake.

After signing a one-year contract extension on Wednesday , it was a nice way for Giants coach Nathan Brown to celebrate.

And Hull old boy Brough, part of the Black and Whites' Challenge Cup winning team in 2005, was once again man of the match, setting up two tries, in addition to that late one of his own, as well as landing five kicks.

O'Meley came close to giving the home side an early lead, only to lose possession crossing the line - and it quickly proved costly at the other end.

Will Sharp was caught out by Brough's kick into the corner and Hodgson put Lawerence over for the game's first try.

We weren't great but found a way to win

Hull hit back, taking the lead for the only time, thanks to some brillance from Dowes.

The prop, who had not scored for three years, conjured up a neat step-and-go past Danny Kirmond to score, Danny Tickle slotting the simplest of conversions.

Huddersfield regained a lead they were not to lose again when Hodgson crossed in the corner after a Kevin Brown pass, Brough kicking the extras.

Tickle reduced the deficit to two points at half-time with a penalty on the hooter. But Hodgson scored his second try five minutes after the break, set up by Brough, who converted to earn the visitors a 16-8 lead.

Scott Grix was then carried off on a stretcher after a hit from Kirk Yeaman.

And Brough kicked another two points after Yeaman was again penalised for another hit on Leroy Cudjoe.

Hull reduced the gap to four points after O'Meley's try was converted by Tickle. But, two minutes later, Hodgson completed his hat-trick.

The hosts were still not done, Manu weaving his way in to hand Tickle another easy two-pointer to set things up for a tense finish at 20-22.

But, instead of a big Hull finish, two tries in the final seven minutes secured Huddersfield's victory.

Jordan Turner's costly spill sent the grateful Brough in for a 60-metre dash.

And, after he had crucially landed the touchline conversion to put his side two scores clear again, Gilmour went over, Brough again adding the extras.

POST-MATCH QUOTES

Hull boss Richard Agar:

"I thought it was a great tackle by Kirk Yeaman. I hope Scott Grix is all right, as you don't want to see anyone brought off like that.

"But how on earth can they construe any point of that as being high?

"It was a fast and tough collision and a big call when we were coming back into it."

Huddersfield coach Nathan Brown:

"From our point of view, we weren't great but we found a way to win the game.

"We're not going as good as we need to and you've just got to win. Hull made it hard and they definitely got stuck into us.

"It was tough. Hull have plenty of good players who physically knocked us about a bit. They had about six tackles when they really got into us - there was nothing wrong with them. They really made us earn our money."
