Jamie Foster is now just two short of a century of points this season |
St Helens ran in a dazzling nine tries as they galloped to a fifth win on the bounce to go second in the Super League XVI table. Winger Jamie Foster led the way, running in two of them, as well as kicking eight goals for a 24-point individual haul. England centre Michael Shenton ran in his 100th career try. And it was a convincing night's work for Saints before next weekend's Good Friday derby at champions Wigan. Saints welcomed back Scott Moore but were missing Aussie prop Josh Perry after last week's 34-18 win at Crusaders. Wakefield were without inspirational captain Glenn Morrison, man of the match in Sunday's romp over Harlequins, who joined Aaron Murphy, Michael Korkidas, Motu Tony and Jeremy Smith on the sidelines. And they were on the back foot from the start, with Gary Wheeler and Chris Flannery going close before Foster collected Paul Wellens' pass to open the scoring. Jonny Lomax ducked under Liam Higgins' attempted tackle to double the lead and Foster got his second after a storming break from Jon Wilkin. Shenton forced over just before the break for his landmark score, Foster adding the extras to make it four kicks from four attempts in the first half. Chris Dean finally gave the Wildcats' fans something to cheer about with a 70-metre run, Josh Griffin kicking the conversion, only for normal service to resume when Shenton sent Ade Gardner over after Matt Blaymire spilled a high kick. Wheeler added the sixth after James Roby's midfield burst, Wellens crossed for a fifth successive match and Tony Puletua was rewarded for his efforts with Saints' eighth. And there was still time for Tommy Makinson to run in a superb long-range try and St Helens became the first club to notch up 300 Super League wins.
