Wakefield v Harlequins

Wakefield Trinity leapt off the bottom of Super League as their third victory of the season put their points total into plus figures for the first time.

John Kear's men ran in nine tries as early season high fliers Harlequins suffered their fourth straight defeat.

Stand-off Ben Jeffries scored two of Trinity's tries against a Quins side who managed six of their own.

Tommy Lee, Glenn Morrison, Chris Dean, Josh Griffin, Stuart Howarth, Luke George and Paul Johnson crossed too.

Griffin, who also kicked seven conversions and a penalty, racked up a 20-point haul as Wakefield won for the first time in four attempts at Belle Vue this season.

After taking control with early tries by Lee and skipper Morrison, Trinity built on that strong start with three tries in 10 minutes from Howarth, Griffin and George.

But, having led 26-6 at half-time, they had to survive a second-half Harlequins fightback.

Jeffries' first try three minutes after the restart seemed to have made the game safe, but three unanswered tries in seven minutes got Quins right back in the game.

I think there'll be one or two in and one or two out for next week

Harlequins coach Rob Powell

Jamie O'Callaghan, skipper Rob Purdham and Chris Melling all crossed, to add to Chris Bailey's lone first-half try as Quins got it back to 32-22.

But Quins suffered a run of penalties for high shots that resulted in second row Tony Clubb spending time in the bin and Wakefield used the extra man to re-establish their grip on the game.

With Quins short-handed, home centre Chris Dean went in and Jeffries added his second.

And, although Karl Pryce and Luke Dorn ran in two more Quins tries in the space of two minutes, Wakefield prop Johnson had the final word.

Having started on minus four points after going into administration in March, Wakefield are now on plus two.

Wakefield coach John Kear:

"I was really pleased with the first half. In the last four first halves we've played ourselves into winning positions but not always carried it forward. This time the players showed some real resolve.

"After half-time we conceded five penalties and you could see the nerves jangling but they stuck to their guns.

"It's tough playing in conditions like this but we played some good, entertaining rugby league and the people who turned up will have seen effort and application. And they've also come away with the right result on the scoreboard."

Harlequins coach Rob Powell:

"We don't want to be in a game where we have to score 54 points to win.

"We got back to within 10 points, but teams can't keep the momentum going for that long.

"The fact is we've just not been good enough. I think there'll be one or two in and one or two out for next week."
