Oldham have appointed Martin Roden as player-assistant coach to Tony Benson.

The 30-year-old former Wigan and Leigh hooker is also the Championship One club's fitness coach.

Roden takes over the job from Paul Reilly, who was forced to leave the club because of work commitments and has signed a one-year contract.

He told the club website: "I'm thrilled to become Tony's number two because it might lead to other things for me in coaching in the future."

Roden, who has a degree in sports science and works full-time with his own gym, added: "My professional background is in fitness, but I've also worked as a player under some top coaches.

"Everything to do with Roughyeds is positive at the moment and I am eagerly looking forward to being part of it again in 2011."
