Former Widnes Vikings winger Chris Percival has died at the age of 30, the club has announced.

Percival, who had been fighting throat cancer, was a member of the Widnes side that gained promotion to Super League in 2001.

He scored 50 tries for the Vikings between 1996 and 2003 and also played for Leigh and Rochdale.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of Chris at this sad time," said a Vikings spokesman.

"Widnes-born Chris impressed at junior level and, when given the opportunity to don his home-town colours, never gave less than 100% when he wore the Vikings jersey."

Percival leaves a wife and young child.
