York City Knights coach James Ratcliffe was philosophical after his side went down 58-8 at home to Super League side Crusaders in the Challenge Cup.
Ratcliffe told BBC Radio York: "We had to do far too much defending, but the effort's been there.
"It was all about what we got out of it with our performance."
Knights fans celebrated as Jonathan Schofield scored an early try and Dennis Tuffour, the Hull FC winger, crossed for the game's last score.
Ratcliffe added: "I've just been speaking to Chris Thorman, one of the most experienced players.
What we're all striving for is success and promotion

"He says the Crusaders were too big, too fast, too strong, you're losing the first contact. Ultimately it's full time against part time.
"He said he tackled [former Wales rugby union captain] Gareth Thomas and it's the hardest kid he ever tackled.
"Fair credit to all our guys, they played really well and we stuck in there. The effort's been there and that's all we can ask for."
The Knights could easily have had two further tries to crow about, but were unlucky with the bounce of the ball.
Ratcliffe will now concern himself with the visit of Rochdale on 25 April and the fitness of a few injured players, among them prop forward Brett Waller (ankle).
"It's a bit of a strange one with Brett. He's running freely but he's not able to turn at the moment.
"We missed Alex Benson today and Jon Fallon [suspended] as well."
Ratcliffe welcomed the arrival of Dave Woods as the club's director or rugby, Ratcliffe's former position.
"It can only be good for the club, he brings a lot of experience. Knowledge is power.
"Ultimately what we're all striving for is success and promotion."
