York City Knights' hopes of taking Championship One by storm suffered an early setback with a 32-22 defeat at Workington in their second game.
The home side raced to a 30-0 lead in 36 minutes, which proved too much for the Knights to pull back.
Knights assistant-coach Mick Ramsden told BBC Radio York: "There was a lot of indiscipline, we gifted them the ball too many times.
"It was a poor first half, just not the way we wanted to start the game."
Ramsden added: "One of our goals today was to reduce our penalty count. After the first 20 minutes we'd already conceded most of the penalties we said we'd allow ourselves for the full game.
"I thought we prepared really well and the trip up was good. I actually commented that it was the best changing room we'd had this year and then they put on a show like that.
"We've got to learn that we can't give teams the ball like we did.
"They took their tries really well, they took the points gladly, but a lot of it was down to us.
"On our game we should be a much stronger side than Workington but they took what was on offer."
Ramsden admitted he gave his side a dressing down during half-time.
"I told them they looked as if they'd come here thinking it would be easy, and it's never an easy trip," he said.
The Knights will try to make amends next week when they entertain South Wales.
"We've got to start stronger than that. We can take a lot of positives from the second half," Ramsden added.
"Giving away cheap possession coupled with a poor defensive performance, Workington took full advantage."
