Workington's convincing first-half display was enough to see off Championship One newcomers Gateshead at the International Stadium on Sunday. Town were 26-12 winners thanks to five tries, two from wing Mike Backhouse along with Jack Pedley, Jamie Marshall and captain Andrew Beattie. Scott Kaighan helped tip the balance with three conversions. Thunder, who were demoted last season, offered three tries of their own from Tom Wilson, Ryan Clarke, and Joe Brown.
