Widnes Vikings have signed former Harlequins RL three-quarter Matt Gardner on a 12-month contract.

Gardner, 24, started his career at Leeds Rhinos and has also played for Huddersfield and Salford.

"I enjoyed my time playing and training at The Stoop but living on the outskirts of London wasn't for me," said Gardner.

"The move to Widnes allows me to return home and I'm looking forward to the new season already."

He added: "Looking at the squad Paul Cullen (Vikings head coach) has got together I'm sure it's going to be a great year ahead and I'm pleased to be part of it."

Cullen was delighted with the capture of the former Quins man as he looks to rebuild his squad ahead of the 2010 Championship campaign.

"Matt is a superb addition to the squad and will add strength and pace to our backline," said Cullen.

"His Super League experience with Huddersfield and Harlequins will be invaluable as we look forward to the forthcoming Co-operative Championship season."
