Leuluai scored two tries for Wigan to help secure victory |
Wigan survived a second-half fightback from Castleford Tigers to eventually secure a narrow win and secure their place in the Super League play-offs. The visitors led 16-8 at the break with two tries from Sam Tomkins and one from Thomas Leuluai, while Kirk Dixon and Brett Ferres responded for the hosts. Leuluai crossed again before converted tries from Dean Widders and Dixon levelled the score at 22-22. Sam Tomkins' try and drop goal won it despite Michael Shenton's late try.
Wigan coach Brian Noble (on Sam Tomkins): "He probably won us the game with his individual efforts. "That's what he can do. He came up trumps today. "We have a gem on our hands. He needs a fair bit of polish but he knows that. He's completely level-headed." Castleford coach Terry Matterson: "We did not get what we came for but we regained some lost pride and we played to the death. "I felt we created enough opportunities to win but we didn't take our chances. At 22-22, I felt we had the momentum but we let them off lightly." Of Wigan try-hero Sam Tomkins: "I'm excited for the future of England with the likes of Tomkins coming through."
