Wigan v Warrington

Wigan gained some revenge for their Challenge Cup defeat by Warrington last week by defeating the Wolves in Friday's Super League encounter.

The hosts overcame a nervy start to take advantage of some tired Warrington defence and put a dent in their opponents' play-off hopes.

George Carmont touched down twice for the Warriors, while Pat Richards scored 16 points.

Amos Roberts, Cameron Phelps, Thomas Leuluai and Martin Gleeson also scored.

After Chris Bridge gave Warrington an early lead the Warriors bounced back, thanks mainly to the introduction of Stuart Fielden and Iafeta Paleaasina off the bench.

Their arrival sparked Wigan into life and they ran in six tries in the space of 27 minutes either side of half-time.

Richards took a long pass to cut inside and score the first before Roberts outpaced the Warrington defence and collected a clever kick from halfway by Sean O'Loughlin to race in.

Sam Tomkins then broke the Warrington line and Phelps took up the attack from dummy half to claim another, before Paleaasina offloaded to Leuluai, who weaved over to give Wigan a 22-4 interval lead.

Wigan continued where they left off and added two more tries within seven minutes of the restart, with first Gleeson going over and then Carmont claiming the first of his brace.

Warrington were without the influential Lee Briers after the break and they fell further behind as Carmont crashed over for his second from a Mark Flanagan offload.

Warrington added some respectability late on through Vinny Anderson and Chris Riley but Wigan were comfortable winners.

Wigan coach Brian Noble:

"I'm really pleased for the players because they found the right way to respond and did some really good things.

"The challenge for them was to be emotionally ready to play. They weren't on Tuesday or Wednesday but they showed up for practice on Thursday and took that into the game.

"They did some things physically they could only do if they were disappointed from losing last week's game."

Warrington coach Tony Smith:

"We would have liked to have done better. We didn't build any pressure in that first half and we were poor with the ball.

"I'm okay with the second half, we showed some spirit and started to work things out a little.

"But we were down to the bare bones."
