Organisers of the York Nines Rugby League Festival have hailed this year's event as a success.

It attracted junior and adult teams from around the country in three separate competitions.

Kevin Pratt, one of the organisers, told BBC Radio York: "All in all, it was a very good tournament. Lots of teams have approached us already hoping to come back next year.

"We'll be contacting the teams in the next couple of weeks as we always do."

Pratt added: "We have some other teams waiting in the wings who are very keen to come who possibly couldn't come this year because of other commitments but we'll have to look at that.

"The aim of the tournament is to develop rugby league the best we can for both the junior sections and the adults so we'll have a look at that and see how we can do it."

The winners of this year's Fairfax Cup were Police Sport UK. They beat York Ironsides 22-6. The Royal Dragoon Guards beat Northallerton Stallions with a golden point in extra time of the Archbishop Dolben Cup.
