Birmingham Bulldogs came closer than ever to beating local rivals Coventry Bears for the first time, only to slip to a 37-26 home defeat on Saturday. The Bulldogs blew a 24-13 lead, ending a run of four successive wins in the Conference Midlands Premier League. Tries from Simon Homer and Rich Rainger earned a 14-13 half-time advantage, Rich Morris and Clinton Tull stretching that lead after the break. But the Bears then ran in four second-half tries to take the points. Tom O'Toole crossed the Bulldogs' line twice, Tanaka Cahaumokara and Matt Cooper also going over. The defeat was only Birmingham's second of the season, and this weekend they will try to gain revenge over their previous conquerors, the Gloucester Warriors.
