Brough impressed with both his handling and kicking |
Wakefield (23) 37 Tries: Ferguson, Brough, Martin (2), Peterson, Blaymire Goals: Brough (5), Martin Drops: Brough
Hull (0) 22 Tries: Raynor, Broughton (2), Yeaman Goals: Tickle (3) Danny Brough's virtuoso display guided Wakefield to a deserved win over Hull. Brough's chip set up a Dale Ferguson try and the Wakefield scrum-half then ran the length of the pitch to score. Another clever kick, this time from Brad Drew, set up Tony Martin for a third Wakefield try with a Brough long pass freeing Matt Peterson to go over. Tries from Gareth Raynor, Kirk Yeaman and Jodie Broughton (two) restored some Hull pride but Martin and Matt Blaymire added two more Wakefield tries. Let go by Hull in 2006, Brough exacted maximum revenge, scoring 15 points - 11 with the boot - to condemn the visitors to their 10th defeat in 12 games. It was Brough's clever chip kick that set Wakefield on their way as Ferguson beat Broughton to the ball, a try that was awarded after video referee Ian Smith gave the attacking side the benefit of the doubt. Brough was soon touching down himself when he snaffled Chris Thorman's pass and sprinted 100 metres to go over the line. The Wakefield scrum-half returned his role of creator as he spun out a long pass to Peterson as the home side established a 23-0 first-half lead. Hull started the second half strongly as Gareth Raynor's first try of an injury-hit season reduced the deficit. But any slim hopes of a Hull revival were quickly dashed as Broughton lost the ball behind his own line allowing Martin to claim his second try. Broughton did his utmost to redeem that defensive lapse with a couple of impressive tries, either side of a score from Yeaman, as Hull attempted to give the score a degree of respectability. But in the closing seconds Wakefield scored their sixth try as Matt Blaymire touched down.
Wakefield coach John Kear: "Danny Brough was the best player on the field; you didn't need to be a rugby league genius to pick him as man of the match. "He was the best player on the field there's no doubt about that. "He was a pest to the Hull attackers in defence and his enthusiasm levels were through the roof. He played really well and I'm dead chuffed with him." Hull coach Richard Agar: "We started in too loose a fashion and we have come in and we can try and defend people as much as we want but we were too loose and didn't compete enough in the first half. "We have got to pull the positives out because we're working with the same bunch of blokes. We haven't got scope at the moment to take too many changes. "We will focus on our attitude again and that's a lot of times this season that we've had 40-minute performances. "We just weren't competitive enough in the opening stanza. I thought we played the second half with momentum but we gave ourselves too much to do."
